The national survey findings indicate private practices are putting a focus on their financial health
AdvancedMD, a provider of cloud-based healthcare software for independent medical practices, today released the findings from its survey of private practice owners and staff on their top priorities for the year. AdvancedMD found that the top “high-priority” issues for private practices include: improving patient payments and payor reimbursement processes and automating claims preparation processes. It also revealed that 67% plan to hire new staff, with 29% planning to add at least one new physician, 20% adding admin staff, and 18% increasing nursing staff.
“Our surveys offer great insights into the challenges private practices are up against, as well as the opportunities they hope to capitalize on. The fact that so many survey respondents are looking to improve patient payment options, while also wanting to renegotiate payor reimbursement processes, makes clear that the financial health of the practice is a major focus this year,” said Amanda Sharp, CEO, AdvancedMD. “Another hopeful data point is that 44% of survey respondents said that they are either planning to add wellness benefits and mental health resources for employees or already have them in place—a key differentiator for practices competing to recruit top healthcare talent and especially critical for the 67% of practices that said they plan to add new staff.”
Last year, a Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) survey discovered that 70% of respondents said that their medical groups’ employee benefits had not changed since 2023. Another 9% reported employee benefits had diminished. Among the 21% who said employee benefits had improved, the most common updates included new wellness benefits and an increase in employer-contributions to healthcare insurance.
More key highlights from the AdvancedMD survey:
- 22% of respondents said their practice plans to add new ancillary services and 13% said they are adding behavioral health services.
- 44% of respondents report they are looking to renegotiate reimbursement rates with one or more payors.
- 19% of respondents said they currently offer multiple patient payment capabilities, including credit card on file (CCOF), digital wallet options, and payment plans, while another 39% said that they plan to add these same options this year.
According to Sharp, “The ambulatory care space is at an inflection point, with many medical groups being acquired by large healthcare organizations. It can be overwhelming for private practice owners who find themselves having to compete against large consolidations. To gain a competitive edge, independently-owned practices need access to innovative healthcare solutions that can help streamline their daily operations, identify and boost revenue opportunities, and improve patient care. AdvancedMD has always prioritized the technology needs of our clients, while also playing an active role in the healthcare community—it’s the primary reason we put our time and effort into conducting industry surveys. We want to better understand the top priorities of the practices we support and the challenges they are up against.”
Survey Methodology
AdvancedMD conducted a survey asking ambulatory care providers about their top priorities via its customer portal and an online survey form during Q1 2025. The survey was completed by 118 survey respondents. The full survey findings have been published on the AdvancedMD blog at: “Top Priorities for Private Practices.”
