RenterCertification.ORG (https://www.rentercertification.org), a nonprofit organization focused on re-entry readiness and housing stability, announced today the launch of its renter education program in correctional facilities across the United States.
The program is currently available in 1,429 correctional facilities, with an additional 217 facilities in the process of activation, providing access to education for more than one million incarcerated individuals nationwide.
Founded by Richard Sherman, RenterCertification.ORG developed the program over more than five years, with approximately 2,500 hours dedicated to curriculum development, instructional design, and adaptation for use in secure correctional learning environments. Early interest has been strong, with more than 250 learners enrolling within the first 24 hours of availability.
The course is structured into 14 instructional modules, each consisting of nine to 14 chapters, and is designed to be completed in approximately 10 hours. Upon completion, learners receive a certificate of completion and may qualify for educational credit, including First Step Act credits, where applicable.
Instructional content combines written material with visual and audio components, including custom graphics, videos, and recorded lessons. The program also incorporates interactive tools such as quizzes, flash cards, and short surveys to reinforce learning and support practical understanding.
Course material focuses on challenges commonly faced during re-entry, including finding and maintaining stable housing, understanding tenant rights and responsibilities, managing identification and personal records, addressing housing discrimination, and locating community-based support services. The curriculum is designed to provide practical knowledge that supports informed decision-making and long-term housing stability after release.
Planned future expansions include a Spanish-language version of the program and supplemental coursework designed for populations facing heightened re-entry barriers, including LGBTQIA+ individuals, people living with HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis C, and individuals with disabilities.
“This project has been life-changing,” said Sherman. “People leaving incarceration deserve access to clear, practical information that helps them avoid preventable setbacks. Education plays a critical role in building stability after release.”
